This section makes several suggestions and recommendations on how to best utilize various LFNAlias Version 1.0 features. It assumes that the reader is already adequately familiar with the application's use and various, operating system features. Further and more recent tips and tricks may be available on our website under Tips and Tricks. |
In newer environments, where users and administrators have access to a (personal) cloud (e.g. OneDrive) it is possible to run LFNAlias from such a cloud. Simply follow the steps below.
1. | Install LFNAlias under the user account, under which you intend to use LFNAlias on other computers (e.g. Administrator), preferably on your personal workstation. You can perform any type of installation, except an Administrative Installation) (see Installation Types). If you already have access to the folders and files created during an LFNAlias installation, this step can obviously be skipped. |
2. | Create a folder named "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" (both, without the quotation marks) in the cloud you can access from the computers, on which you also intend to use LFNAlias. If OneDrive is the cloud you intend to use, the path to the created folder would then typically be, C:\Users\User Name\OneDrive\Program Files\ or C:\Users\User Name\OneDrive\Program Files (x86)\ (e.g. C:\Users\Admin\OneDrive\Program Files\ or C:\Users\Admin\OneDrive\Program Files (x86)\, respectively). |
3. | Assuming you have installed LFNAlias in the default location on your local hard disk (i.e. under C:\Program Files\SST\LFNAlias or C:\Program Files (x86)\SST\LFNAlias), navigate and select the installation (i.e. the "LFNAlias") folder in Windows (File) Explorer. |
4. | Copy the entire LFNAlias folder, including all sub-folders and files, into the cloud folder you created in Step 2. |
Provided you can access the cloud to which you copied the LFNAlias folder and files in the setps above, you can now run LFNAlias on any computer, by
1. | logging on with the user credentials (i.e. the user name and password) you used in the previous steps, |
2. | in Windows (File) Explorer, opening the folder in the cloud to which the LFNAlias folder and files were copied (e.g. C:\Users\Admin\OneDrive\Program Files (x86)\), and |
3. |
double clicking on the LFNAlias application's icon in Windows (File) Explorer or
selecting the Open or Run as Administrator menu item from the Windows (File) Explorer's context menu.
Note, that the executable file (LFNAliasEn.exe) is located in the En sub-folder of the
LFNAlias folder (e.g. C:\Users\Admin\OneDrive\Program Files (x86)\LFNAlias\En).

Tip #2 | Running LFNAlias from Removable Storage Devices |
In cases in which you do not have access to a cloud on all computers, running LFNAlias from removable storage devices/media (e.g. a memory stick, aka flash drive) constitutes an equally simple, and no less reliable means to achieve the same result.
1. | Install LFNAlias on your personal workstation, under any user account, under which you can subsequently access and copy the installed folders and files. You can perform any type of installation, except an Administrative Installation (see Installation Types). If you already have access to the folders and files created during an LFNAlias installation, this step can obviously be skipped. |
2. | Connect the removable storage device to the computer. |
3. | Open the drive as which your removable storage device was mounted in Windows (File) Explorer. |
4. | Create a folder named "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" (both, without the quotation marks) on the volume/drive opened in the previous step. If the removable was mounted as logical volume/drive D:, the created path would then be either D:\Program Files\ or D:\Program Files (x86)\. |
5. | Assuming LFNAlias was installed in the default location on your local hard disk (i.e. under C:\Program Files\SST\LFNAlias or C:\Program Files (x86)\SST\LFNAlias) navigate and select the installation (i.e. "LFNAlias") folder in Windows (File) Explorer. |
6. | Copy the entire LFNAlias folder, including all sub-folders and files, from the folder into which it was installed on the hard disk, to the folder you created on the removable storage device you created in Step 4. |
7. | Safely remove the removable storage device from the computer. |
You can now run LFNAlias on any computer into which you can insert or to which you can connect the removable storage device used in the above procedure. Simply,
1. | Connect or insert the removable storage device to or in the computer, on which you want to run LFNAlias. |
2. | In Windows (File) Explorer, open the folder (on the removable storage medium), to which you copied the LFNAlias folder and files in Steps 4 through, and including 6, above (e.g. D:\Program Files\LFNAlias\. |
3. | Open the En folder in the LFNAlias folder (e.g. D:\Program Files\LFNAlias\En). This is where the executable file (i.e. LFNAliasEn.exe) ought to be. |
4. | Double click on the LFNAlias application's icon in Windows (File) Explorer or select the Open or Run as Administrator menu item from the Windows (File) Explorer's context menu to execute/run LFNAlias. |
